What was it that drew you to me?
Was it something on my face? –
the cute little smiles I made?
my fresh kissable lips?
the ripples on my cheeks?
the bewitching gap between my teeth?
Was it my long ebony hair
or my raised cheek bones?
my ears?
my nose?
my eyebrows?
What was it?

Was it when you saw me promenading along the shore,
my hands swiveling around my hips?
Oh yea? Was it my broad flexible hips?
my long silvery shanks?
my huge banks?
narrow waist?
laden breast’?
or was it something more?
Tell me darling, what was it?
Was it my charming voice,
sweeter than cans of honey?
or was it in how I looked at you
with my alluring sexy eyes?
Was it my softspokenness
or something beyond these?

What was it that drew you to me?
Was it those long gold earrings,
or the sparkling diamond necklace?
Was it that minidress
that revealed my brown thighs and calf,
or the sleeveless crop top
that uncovered my navel and midriff?
Was it my gentle shoulders
my nape?
my shin?
or brown skin?
What was it?
Tell me, Darling,
what was it that drew you to me?
Were these the grab
or was there something more?
You say I’ve grown old,
and so you’re looking away, to another;
away from this body
that bore you five children?
Because I’m wrinkled and drooping?

Listen Darling,
I am a woman,
and I believe my beauty is unreachable;
beyond my skin
beyond my face
beyond my hair
beyond my dressing
beyond…
lies the real me, the beautiful me,
the me that feeds your kids
and welcomes your visitors home;
so don’t just look at me,
and judge me by my physicals,
Darling.

Good Lord! Not a real woman in this world who can’t relate to this! God blessed me with the type of man who doesn’t see me as i am now but as I was when we met a century ago! In each other’s eyes we have not changed, even if our bodies remind us daily that we have. What a beautiful tribute to women everywhere! Thank you for this lovely write.

A gorgeous poem, Lamittan and so befitting today being International Women’s Day. There are so many reasons to a woman, a complex creature she is.

Lamitan, your beguiling poem leads us on a journey to a very essential truth. Beauty may be what attracts us to each other initially, but is our inner selves that bind us together. Lovely poem for International Women’s Day. β€

What a tour de force tribute to women! You’ve outdone yourself, Lamittan–this is brilliant. Such deep respect you show here, and such truth. I’m reminded, sadly, of all my mom did for my dad and how disrespected she was by him (and much, much worse). She would have loved reading this poem–it really would have touched her heart and soul. π

Oh my senior brother, I’m moved by your compliment which touches the soul in its entirety. I’m sorry your mum had to undergo your dad’s ruthless self-styled demeanor and comportment. She’s is a hero to be lauded this day, because for your sake she took the insult in one hand and the austerity in another

And brooked it all, and lived to create a new story for you. I laud her efforts. May she be at peace wherever she is. I’m glad this poem resonates with her situation. Many thanks for your kind words.

This is a lovely poem, Lamittan. I loved the progression and the repeated question. Women (and men) are so much more than mere bodies, and hopefully we grow more beautiful on the inside as our outsides decline.
